UN urges Libya to make 2017 'year of decisions'

The United Nations has urged Libyans to make 2017 the year of decisions and political breakthrough.

Speaking to the UN security Council the UN special envoy to Libya Martin Kobler said they are beginning to see an emerging consensus among parties

He noted that 2016 was spent seeking to implement the agreement and efforts were made to begin the re-establishment of state authority across Libya. He however cautioned that despite some gains Libyans are unable to address the root causes of division.

Kobler suggests that the important decisions to be taken should focus on possible amendments to the political agreement, forming a strong army and police force and how best revenues from oil and gas can better serve the entire country.

Libya has also been advised to ameliorate efforts so as to control the country’s porous borders and stop terrorists, weapons traffickers and criminal gangs from exploiting the security vacuum.
